Washing a Poem

Brian C. Miller

Directions:

1. Brainstorm words and ideas and wear them like bold, neon stripes.
2. Sort these words by ideas—each idea becomes the color of thematic poems.
3. Add a first draft to clean up brain odor. The draft will soon spin random words on your paper.
4. Add revision to whiten your poem. It will remove cliché stains.
5. Fill revision to the max line in dispenser of your brain. Or add ¾ cup metaphor to wash the words like an accidental alliteration.
6. Add a computer and word document to start the washing cycle of your poem. Make sure there are no technical or mechanical glitches.
7. For best results, add craft and originality to wash 5 minutes after poem-wash cycle has begun.
8. After wash is completed, place your revised poem on a clothesline to dry with the sun and wind. It freshens the poem, and it looks professional. Editors love that!
9. CAUTION: DO NOT PLACE YOUR POEM IN DRYER. IT SHRINKS YOUR CREATIVITY AND IS TOO HOT FOR EDITORS TO HOLD.
10. Repeat the process for the next load of a poem if you wish. Writing poetry is a sweaty business.
