On That Night Walk Home

She is never as loud as she is now.
Her breath is heavy
as a race-horse’s.
The click of her heels
floods the empty streets and alleys.
On this belligerent night,
she can only be
the most obvious target,
the fear of the prey
shamelessly pinpointing her position.
Even alone, she is followed.
Her footsteps throw their voice
in a hundred directions.
Her eyes are magicians
that pull shapes
from black handkerchiefs of shadow.
Every walk home,
it’s her imagination that’s
the cold blooded killer
Every step she takes,
the scene of the crime goes with her.
