In dreams, masked thieves soft-shoe
throughout the rooms, scour my belongings.

Every night, with my head wedged
between pillow and sheets,
they run fingers down book spines,
shuffle my precious vinyl collection,
investigate drawers, closets,
the souvenirs, the photographs,
every aspect of my life.

They have no use for me,
just the stuff they can sell.
So they snaffle the stereo, the TV,
the credit cards, the letters,
my favorite chair, the remains
of the last meal you cooked for me.

In dreams, I am stripped bare
of belongings, everything of value,
all that’s precious, until nothing’s left
but my body with me inside it.
And you, of course, curled up beside me,
your head on my shoulder,
one arm flopped across my chest.

That’s why these are dreams.
Nightmares still have a ways to go.
