Miracle Baby, Circa 2024

Bill Tope

Harriet looked down bleakly at
her friend in the hospital bed.
Katie was moribund, virtually at
death’s door, and the other woman
didn’t know what to do for her.

Katie’s pregnancy had gone horribly
wrong: the embryo had implanted
outside the uterus, in the fallopian
tube, an ectopic pregnancy and an
almost certain death sentence for
the embryo. Katie moaned and
Harriet looked around for a nurse,
for anyone.

The case had become a cause
célèbre, drawing world-wide
attention. A recent Texas Supreme
Court decision, however, ruled in
favor of the embryo, meaning that,
barring a natural miscarriage, the
embryo could not be removed by
means of surgical or chemical
abortion. The embryo, they
decreed importantly, has rights.

The court cited an ectopic pregnancy in
the U.K. in the last century, wherein the
baby survived, a one in 60M occurrence. In
light of this event, The U.S. Supreme
Court refused to hear a challenge to the
Texas decision, consigning the baby and
Katie’s fate to the hands of God.

God’s mercy ran out 12 hours later, when
Katie’s fallopian tube ruptured and she
and the baby bled to death. There would
be no miracle baby this time, thought
Harriet, as she looked down, graveside,
at her friend’s casket.
