All in One Person

Susan Pollet

Washing the bodies of a girl with delusions
And a man dressed up as a woman beaten
By an angry mob, she bestowed her kindness

Giving money for food to a poor man who had four
Children and a wife to feed, and shelter to
An epileptic homeless person, she bestowed her kindness

She forgave her daughter for never visiting her in prison
For a crime it turned out she did not commit, and forgave
The person who lied about her doing it, she bestowed her kindness

Around the same time she stalked the man who had her falsely
Imprisoned, and planned to gun him down in the Church where
He confessed all sins but the one to her, her kindness withdrawn

Then fate intervened, a person needed her help, she
Washed his body and put ointment on his wounds, caressed
His head, spoke softly and gently, she bestowed her kindness

Her rage diverted by her duty to others, Mother Teresa restored
By fate, by God, by happenstance? She remained a healer
Never to become a killer, free to bestow her kindnesses— again and again
