Any Place But Home

Greta T. Bates

Dottie had a key to the lock, but she never used it anymore. She stood on one side of the door, patiently—a guest in her own/old home.

“We’ve been biding our time, waiting for you,” they, the ‘rents said, eyes wide, fingers tapping hand to hand, licking their lips, “Did you get lost, stray from the path?”

Dottie looked around, recognizing it all—antiques, heirlooms, photographs—the furnishings of her former prison.

They had gnawed away at her mind, her heart, her self confidence for years, belittling her, crushing her dreams, making her feel small, dependent, and she had let it happen. Here they were again, hungry, ready to eat her alive.

Furiously, Dottie began to pat herself down like a criminal being checked for weapons, looking for that key. She’d had it the whole time and now she was scrambling, desperate to bust out.
