Down in the Dirt

Philosophy 101

Duane Anderson

I wasn’t a professor of philosophy.
I didn’t teach Spinoza, Descartes, Aristotle,
or even Kinky Friedman,
but I had my own kind of philosophy
that I preached and followed.
If you don’t want to tread water
the rest of your life, get out of the water.
Don’t kick the wall
unless you want to break a few toes.
Don’t look at yourself in a mirror
if you want to see beauty.
If you smell like a skunk,
you may want to change colognes.
If you enjoy having company, don’t forget
to welcome the cockroaches into your home.
Take a walk around the block,
see a small part of the world,
or listen to my words,
you may learn something yet.
