Murder in a Small Town

Mary Winkler, who brutally shot her husband, tells of sexual and physical abuse.

They want to be shocked.
Want to see pictures of black eyes and x-rays of broken bones.
Ask the girls about late-night screaming matches
they couldn’t hear.
How could they?
After all, I worked so hard to make sure
they didn’t. Didn’t know about the money issues.
Didn’t ask why we didn’t see their grandparents
like we used to.

Shock wasn’t what I felt that day.

Slain preacher’s wife denies pulling trigger

Not just the slutty costumes.
Or how he stopped the baby from crying
with a hand over her mouth.

They don’t write articles about falling in love at college.
Endless sympathy for battered women,
but nothing when I say I miss him.

Mary Winkler sentenced in husband’s death

Let’s see you sob in a courthouse.
Answer questions about the boom of the gun,
and you can’t remember pulling a trigger.
Having to constantly answer why
when there isn’t an answer.

You didn’t hear his sermons or singing to the baby.
And now, neither will I.
