The cop mumbled it under his breath
in the hospital corridor
after finding my lover laid out
in the public bathroom of Penn Station
needle in his neck
full dead
foam trickled
from his chalk-white mouth
I don’t blame him

After the officer resurrected his track strewn
bony
sickly life with Narcan
after the ER
put my unconscious lover
in a nice bed with an IV
I still understood
what the cop meant

I know it in my gut
after my lover comes to
and is able to dress and feed himself
we will hit it again
and again
