You leave breathy messages
on my phone -
you speak to me in Tewa.

My blood starts to flow
as fast as the Rio Grande.
You tell me of the sage,
the changing seasons and the smell of
the pine trees.

I can smell them, touch them—
but want to touch you...

I keep your messages, listen to them a thousand times,
when I feel you’ve slipped
over to the other world—

a world from which no one returns.
