Bury Me in West Coast Waters

Clementine Zei

All of my dreams begin the same way:
I am standing before my childhood home
and everything is gray.
So I ask myself -
Have I lost the ability to dream in color?
And in my dreams I see a dead fig tree,
one that I have let die
because I couldn’t say goodbye.
I’ve always wondered
why we are so afraid of dying.
We begin to do this as soon as we are born.
Like rotting fruit.
Oh how I would love to be buried
at Land’s End
where the wind meets the sand
and the whirling ocean so lovingly juxtaposes
the piercing cliffs of San Francisco Bay.

Take me to where this dream ends
so that I may dangle my feet over the edge
just the way I’d done so recklessly all those years ago.
Or take me somewhere else! Anywhere!
Just don’t let it be 2:00 AM in the morning,
don’t let me wake up just yet.
Let me run amok within my own mind
for just a few moments more.
