Snowfall

William Ogden Haynes

In a kingdom full of rainstorms, he
craves the silent, splendid snow, it’s
soft, fragile brightness cheering the

scene. But, in the dark grey rain, his
mind always strays to hardships, leaving
him compelled to sniff-out haunting

troubles from the past, and worse, the grim
possibilities of the future. Down, down,
down into the darkness of reflectivity,

a contemplation he cannot stop, that is
inevitable and hopeless. Then gently,
thoughts come like ghosts, the sad, the

regrettable, the lost contentment, the good
and the bad, as he obsessively ruminates
on his life. And on those rainy nights when

he is lost in sad contemplation, it sometimes
brings him to tears. And when it does, soon
after, in his mind it almost always begins to snow.
