Decadence
Susie Gharib
Art used to imitate Life
on canvas, in fiction and rhymes,
but now Life imitates Art,
imbibing from movies and other visual
lights
a mania for wars, for fraud, for crimes.
Fairy tales are distorted to accommodate the tastes
of a frantic audience who’s hard to
lease,
so Cinderella, Snow White and the Little Mermaid
are updated according to the whims of a decadent age.
I wonder if their authors writhe in their graves.
Entertainment is an interplay of fists and cars,
of violence and abuse of martial arts,
of horror that boasts the crudest forms
and villainy that vies with a chivalrous cause
to allure our youth.
