On Stones and Bones

Brenda Mox

History is a knife slicing back through time
to look on those who labored and birthed
the temples that stand in strange yellow light
as rain darkened stone pates
crumple quietly into themselves,
dissolving one particle
at a time.

We carry off a measure of history
and culture built on hyperbole,
imagining the ancients
labored for us.

Standing on the stones and bones of ancestors,
swearing unity with people across borders of time,
whose sacrifice was a sacrament.
One must acknowledge that debt, most infinite,
their tunnels through earth and time.

These fragments of the past,
like scalloped strands of mandibles
make sounds like whispered secrets
that roll around heavily.

Stone gods, practiced
in the art of creating
magnificent buildings
and taking up residence therein.
Diving from steeples
their souls smeared
more art than hope.
