Playing at Being Human

Please leave the flowers out of this poem,
unless they’re roses on an anniversary,

lilies at a funeral,

carnations because they’re cheaper
than roses, or if you can, force them
to play human,
like swaying in the sun,
while the person they love
walks by without saying goodbye,

like listening to an eulogy
they thought they’d never hear,

like saying nothing
about the way
rising credit card debt
hurts less because of inflation,
until the interest rates go up.
