I don’t mind dying, at least now be

Gale Acuff

-cause I’m still alive, or think so, but may
-be that’s why I should be afraid to lose
what I am now to what I won’t become,
so to speak, when I’m dead, but at Sunday
School when I told Miss Hooker how
I feel about life and death and me just
ten years old she laughed and laughed until her
eyes damn-near disappeared and her glasses
almost fell off her nose and her lipstick
cracked on her lower lip—Mother says that
she shouldn’t be wearing so much of it,
eyeliner neither, and her skirts are too
short, Miss Hooker shows too much leg, but I
think not enough and told her so. And live.
