Talking About Music

Christopher Hivner

Sitting in a classroom
waiting for dismissal time,
my friend Rob and I
talking about music,
we were always
talking about music.
Rob notices this other guy
writing on his notebook,
a notebook that he had
adorned with the name
Bruce Springsteen.
Rob says to the kid
“Hey, did you hear what happened?”
while pointing to the Springsteen scribble.
Within five minutes
Rob had convinced the kid
that Springsteen had died that day
in a motorcycle accident.
The kid’s face was ashen,
and I was biting the inside of my cheek
to keep from laughing.
Rob included me,
“You heard about it, right?”
“Oh, yeah,” I replied,
“It’s all over the radio.”
“Shit,” the kid muttered
as he stared at his notebook
with undue reverence.
The bell finally rang,
and Rob and I walked out
talking about music.
We were always
talking about music.
