Back then the TV situation
comedies came with laugh tracks

But the gray clapboard tenements
in Hartford Connecticut
never looked like the pastel-colored
ranch houses of technicolor California

The rats the rats
—just could never kill
them like we did half
of the jungles in Vietnam

Every summer a circus would
come around with rides that looked
like miniature camouflaged helicopters
and missile winged jet fighter airplanes

Parade parade
And sometimes an et’nic
festival or funeral

Taping money to the life-
size plaster saint

taking it from the wallet or
purse when your mom or
dad was passed out

Ha ha ha
—if everyone else in the country
was laughing why shouldn’t we?

And beer cigarettes and cars we
could never afford but could briefly
steal

was how we could be like those
better class of white folks
on TV
