Weaverbirds

See the zoetrope animation
of the birds moving back
and forth. Forth and back.
Back and forth. Carefully
constructing a diver’s bell,
a coconut and a shrunken
head with bits of grass,
leaves and odds and ends.

You should be hypnotised
by now. A bomb could go
off inches from your face
and you’d watch the birds
going back and forth. Forth
and back. Back and forth.

This isn’t courtship but war.
