The Expanse
Christopher Hivner
It’s the never-ending quality
that burns.
The ocean has barriers
but with weak eyes
we can only see
the expanse
and it has no end.
It has a soul though
and we try to steal
a chamber for ourselves
to give our lives
a meaning
we yearn for
instead of the one
we already own.
The waves rush our ears
like the susurration
of a mother’s
hushed lullaby.
Before we sleep
we dream,
and it’s in the background
tugging like high tide
for our full attention.
