The orders came in,
fifty-nine of them,
in starch white envelopes,
black lettering,
reading US Navy and Department of Defense
in crisp Ariel ten point font.
I got USS Indianapolis! exclaimed one sailor.
SSN York said another.
I’m moving to San Diego.
Virginia here!
Fifty-nine orders, assigning fifty-nine sailors
to their new lives,
starting their new careers across the globe.
The sixtieth order came in today-
for Ben.
Upright marble, white,
with crisp black lettering in
Ariel 24 point font:
Beloved
son,
brother,
grandson,
fiancée,
& friend.
The Jewish star
as the emblem of faith.
He’s already here,
no traveling required.
