A Fairy Tale

Chaim Jones

in memory of N.

She ventured into the forest of memory.
In a bundle on her back she carried
the bones of her dead lover.
She was going to bury them
beneath the most ancient tree.
But when she got to the heart of the forest
the tree had been cut down.
In its place grew a thicket of brambles
the color of dried blood.
She turned around: The wind
had hidden the way with fallen leaves.

She lives there now
eating blackberries & drinking rainwater
& sheltering in a hut of bramble & bone.
At night she shouts curses & cries for help.
In the town a stranger hears
the faint far-off barking of a dog.
