Memory’s Masquerade

It appears wearing the sumptuous garments of nostalgia, or girded in the defensive armor of a warrior, or the bloodstained robes of the martyr.

It bears little resemblance to truth at the time when truth was denied, when we were too frightened or angry or helpless or proud.

Memory is a contrivance, a way to abate the unbearable tension between truth and our readiness to forgive ourselves.
