Ghost Violin, Paintbrush, and Pen
Leigh-Anne Burley
The violin excuses itself behind
garbled sounds stuck in its neck,
fearful of the polite applause.
The paintbrush hides in the box,
paint globbed in its belly,
afraid of the artist’s stare.
The pen refuses to glide
down the barrel and
roll across the pristine parchment.
Wasting artists caress ghost
bow, paintbrush, and pen on
music never played,
pictures never painted, and
stories never read.
Seeds robbed of their sprout
of what could be
immobilizing immortality.
The sacred becomes profane, with
grating sounds, sloppy strokes,
and ink scratches.
Even the winds charm chimes,
play symphonies in conches, and
rainbows decorate the skies.
