The Drowning Poems

Ron Riekki

I write them.
They’re familial.
They rise up.
My mother
told me
one time
that she wanted
to drown herself
in a lake
I loved.
Past tense.
A cousin
drowned
in a lake
that views itself
as superior,
a lake
that eats.
Another relative

who found
the clock
at the bottom
of the ocean.
And the recruit
in boot camp
that the drill instructor
buried
in water
forever.
How can I not
keep writing
poems
about them?
How can I
not?
How can I
make those poems
stop?
