A Song of Humanity

Shakti Pada Mukhopadhyay

In the fierce battle, Kyiv was turning
to a heap of ashes. The twilight sky was burning
with the arrays of fire balls rushing towards earth,
caused by the gushing missiles.
From Moscow, Ivan came to fight the battle
against Ukraine, but he was searching
his poet-son Lev, who was a student in a college in Kyiv.

With the help of the map, Ivan had reached the hostel
and found that Lev was lying on the ground.
In the darkness, he saw his dead son lying
in the missile-hit debris. Lev was carrying his notebook
with his last poem written on it:

“Beware! Stop the war.
Let the Dove of peace shut its wings
never in the sky, but should sweep away
the clouds of war. Let us pray for the nature
to be in tears, with rains washing away
the sins and fears. Let us sleep
with a dream of unity and vision of sagacity.
We may not have a time for regret
even before death.”

Ivan laid down his arms and was wailing
in intense grief, with Lev on his knees.
Ukrainian soldiers in the meantime, had proceeded
to assassinate Ivan, but good senses prevailed,
since a human being could have been annihilated,
but not humanity. A martyr’s song sowed
the seeds of unity, love and fraternity forever.
