The Kick

John Grey

David’s ten years out of the family home
but his mother’s still with him.
Not physically.
But, in every other way.

That’s why other women
come up short
in his estimation.
Even Rita, the one he married,
is more comparison
than fully-fledged woman.

“Go back and live with her then,”
often bursts from
Rita’s temper zone.
But he prefers to mold her
into something called
“the woman who gave birth to me”
or “the one who sacrificed so much.”
She can’t go back and give birth to him
but she’s no stranger to the sacrifice.

David’s mother waited on him
like a slave
when she wasn’t boasting about
her smart and handsome little boy.
He’s bald and paunchy now
and working at a hardware store.
But her praise hasn’t bothered
to change with the times.

Rita’s pregnant.
She’s afraid that his mother
will think that she’s the one having it.
Another David for her to fuss over
and praise to the limits.

Last night, she felt it kick.
No doubt, her mother-in-law did too.
