i did the laundry on sunday

Brian Lee

and hung it and ironed it
and folded it and put it
away. the clothes surprised
me with how light, how
blithe they were. i set up
the hollow pole between
the metal grilles of the front
door, strung the soaked
garments up one by one,
like salted fish in a sleepy
market from bygone days.
every now and then the
unclouded sun’s light
would sting my eyes, the
sky surrounding an
unrelenting, atmospheric
blue. the birds came as
scarcely as the clouds.
i heard the car returning
with the crunch of gravel
and ran for the keys, then
watched the trousers
billowing in the breeze.
it was bright on sunday,
and i found out how i
liked laundry, and the sun,
and sundays,
in general.
