sometimes i look at you,
sitting there, half-smiling,
afternoon sun pouring
in from a windowpane
spilling on your forehead
and cheek, and wonder
if i’m doing something
wrong. through an old
looking-glass i peer.
your features still
winsome as ever, only
an unsettling stillness
previously not found there.
you still lean your head
to the side in earnest
contemplation, and
laugh without deliberate
self-regard; but something
has come to pass. like
the patching up of a well
or the shuttering of
tilted blinds. i no longer
know how to entertain
someone contented
with silence.
