You’re alive but you’re not

I’m your son but I often fail

I’m here today to help you
with your lunch

Because unlike the aide
—when it drips
I will wipe it off your sweatshirt
or your chin

“What! In the Goddamn holy fa-fa-fa-
is going on here!”

Ah Mom
At least you can still try to swear

“What? We all gone crazy here?
This world gone-gone gone...?”

I wish it had Mom

How much longer God?
Because soon it will be her
eighth year in the Dementia Ward

And before putting another spoonful
of diced carrots before her
she turns to me and smiles

Oh maybe tomorrow the next
day or just never

Because what good will it do
her to know
that the world is not insane
