New Year’s Death

John Ragusa

Luke Gripp was in a very festive mood, as were all the people around him on Bourbon Street. In a couple of minutes, they would ring in the New Year!
It was a time for revelry. Luke had made his New Year resolutions and intended to keep them. His job was secure; his salary paid well; and he was in excellent health. The coming year would be one of his best ever. Prosperity and joy awaited him.
There was another reason why Luke was welcoming the New Year. As of 12 Midnight, the statute of limitations on a rape he’d committed many years earlier would expire. It was wonderful to know that the law couldn’t touch him after that. Even if he confessed to his crime, he couldn’t be arrested for it. He’d walk, and no one could stop him. Hooray!
Now the crowd was counting down the seconds to Midnight. “Five, four, three, two, one . . . Happy new year!”
Couples kissed each other. They all joined in to sing “Auld Lang Syne.” Fireworks of many colors lit up the sky.
Luke Gripp fired his shotgun in the air, a custom that is common with some folks when the new year arrives. (It has also been discouraged because of the harm it can do).
Then the falling bullet from Luke’s own rifle came down and struck his head, killing him instantly.
It wasn’t such a happy occasion for him, after all.
