A Hat for Every Occasion

She met her husband suntanning at the beach with a book. Strolling his Labrador, he stopped to admire her. She smiled while the sun speckled her face through the fibers of her Panama hat.

When he returned home to cold dinners without phone calls or explanations she met another man trying on a Kentucky Derby hat adorned with sinmay flounces and decorative flowers.

As the years sagged, her head resting on the pillow while the veil ripped from the felt hat on the dresser pressed honeycombs into her cheeks. She lay cast aside from her husband in her own net.

The bitter morning her only child flew away from her to begin a top job in Hawaii, her canvas baseball cap did little to disguise the handmade stitches stabbing her forehead

On the night she died, the crocheted beanie she used as a tea cosy snug her thin, peppery hair. Too weathered to comfort her years, too matted to rib together those that had passed in shade.
