Gloria

Kathylynne Somerville

Her name was Gloria, reminiscent of the song from the eighties, the hit.
A discotech of temperaments, she sang
major and minor notes on a scale measured by her mood, determined by the frequency
of her feelings. To harmonize with her, I learned to play the violin, cello, piano, the guitar.
However poor my coordination and lousy my agility, I persevered, wrote
compositions for us to play together. Instruments from different duets, we played sounds from alternate eras, producing opposing styles and odd forms. Without intervals, we practiced. Deaf our dissonance could never find stability or a semblance of tonal fusion.
Music sheets thrown on maple flooring, bows broken in two, blisters rising
with fluid on fingertips, frustration re-strung us with loose strings strung through the tuning posts of a fretboard. Tightening pegs, I tried to tune our bodies with a tuning fork, twisting light and heavy, thin and thick gauges, I strung and re-strung—
sharp, the nylon snapped.
