Should I feel bad
about being a child of the suburbs,
wish for a more exotic background?

Should I pretend
I’m not a pre-boomer
nursed on the anxiety of World War II?

Should I deny
my liberal arts education,
my definite Democratic Party ideals?

My white lady privilege
makes me uncomfortable.
I worry I’m unfashionable.

I am not a disadvantaged poet,
trans, or a minority, or disabled.
I’m just old.

I am who I am
and love whom I love.
I write from my beginning place.

It is enough to be eighty
and have lived my life.
It is enough to love the world.
