My Grandfather’s Typewriter

Maureen McDole

My teenage bedroom was 2 miles from the family business at Madeira Beach. It wasn’t big, so I emptied the closet except for a desk featuring my grandfather’s typewriter. Same typewriter he used to compose his fishing reports for the Saint Petersburg Times. On the wall I hung a map of the world above the bookcase with rows of The New Book of Knowledge. In my closet, I’d pretend I was a journalist, my dream when I grew up. I never imagined anyone would want to marry me, so I picked out a place on the map–the one imprinted on me by infomercials about the AIDS crisis–and saw myself living there: wandering Africa in a long braid, seeing places as a photographic journalist, maybe adopting a child. I never got to Africa, well not yet anyway, but I did grow up to be a writer and adopted my youngest sister’s child. And I wonder if all those childhood images are still there, collecting dust in the drawers beneath my grandfather’s typewriter.
