Maybe We Should Arm the Children Next

Let’s keep the victims of this tragedy
in our thoughts and our prayers, say
the Democratic politicians. No, say
the Republicans, let’s arm all the guards
and teachers in our children’s schools.
If everyone has a gun, they seem to say,
then any problem can be addressed.

Our minds tell us that arming everyone,
everywhere, all the time, isn’t the solution.
And our souls say that thoughts and prayers
are not enough, either.

Leave it to the pundits, the writers and the
poets to chronicle this recurrent and tragic
nightmare. The politicians aren’t up for it.
Maybe we should arm the children next.
