Why Do You Feel that Way?

Bill Tope

“What do you think, professor?” the lissome interviewer from the literary magazine asked.
“I feel,” he began, opening up his hands as if to reveal a secret, “that the poet is the dreamer in each of us, whereas the prose writer is the architect, the mathematician, and the engineer we each embrace.”
She nodded avidly. “That’s fascinating. Why do you say that?”
“I don’t know.” He shrugged and grinned affably. “It just sounded good, I guess.” She blew out a breath. “And,” he added, “I thought you might be impressed.” He fiddled with the key to his hotel room.
