The Cosmos is A Lonely Place in A Graduate School Seminar on Critical Theory (#4)

Kenneth DiMaggio

Tacitus I would read on my
own as I would Boethius
and Bede

The end of one empire
and the beginning of
a new civilization

and between them
a graduate school
seminar on critical
theory taught at
a state university
surrounded by
a dead cornfield

We would all become
more thin and pale
when we handed in
our final paper
to be read and critiqued
by an ever more monk-
like and silent professor

But before that
a custodian told us
to take shelter

A tornado was
approaching

And for the eight
or nine students and
their mentor who
refused to leave this
classroom

perhaps this spinning funnel
of destruction would arrive
with an answer
