The Eye

Susie Gharib

I grew up to believe that every pharaoh that reigned
was a religious renegade
which was probably due to the story of Moses
and the splitting of the Red Sea.

The word pharaoh became associated with sinful pride
and idolatry.
I only lately learnt that some were monotheistic,
believing in a self-begotten deity
who created heaven and earth,
whose name will always be hidden,
and whose children were conceived
from his fallen tears.

It’s a pity that his ever-vigilant Eye,
the sun disc over the horizon,
has become a dubious emblem
saturated with schemes
and political intrigues.
