She’s Made Her Appearance

Consumption—
is what tuberculosis was named in the 1800’s.
Victims would slowly perish
“wasting away” famously romanticized today.
Consuming me
the walls underneath my hair cold and wet.
My words sticky
sickly is how I present myself.
Dark circles hug my chin
as my head hangs low.
My stomach—
now round and bulging with regret
thundering and howling in revulsion.
Mirrors seem to be my enemy—
the treaty we made shortly ago nullified.
Fingertips blue with a purplish tint
numbingly grasp onto anything warm.
I’ve been slipping—
the edge whispered sweet promises.
It would be too easy to say I was pushed
the truth—
I threw myself into the songs of possibility.
Consumption—
“wasting away” and there’s
nothing romantic about it.
The walls underneath my hair have decayed
revealing a dank space
filled with cobwebs of my memories.
Another widow spindling anew with fresh delusions
the other spiders lie on their backs rotting.
My words sticky
peeling themselves from walls
rearranging neatly on the widows back
to be placed onto her masterpiece.
Carefully, she swaddles them neatly
and lays eggs on top
Hatching, they swarm the ghostly space
consuming me.
