When I Laid My Blue-Veined Hand

on your brown one
and you drew away
as if my touch
had stung,
when I felt
the hurt
of my impact
against the wall you
had built to keep
your frightened heart
safe, I remembered
my own ancestral hurt—
deep, distant,
familiar—a wall
I once raised
to keep and contain
my own pain.

At that moment
of touch,
I wanted to find
a way to help
you understand
that a story
is a story
and becomes at last
just that: a story—
after it’s been tucked
for safekeeping
into the nest
of someone’s
listening heart.
