The farmer’s pocket leaks,
spills the future harvest
as he walks, his tractor
with a busted axle a mile
back. Hasn’t seen a car
to thumb a ride from. The farm
still miles away, the journey
hot, dry, fraught with snakes,
papyrus, the odd escaped
mental patient, just like
in the movies. Seeds
scatter in the dust,
in the swamp, on the road,
about ten per second,
and fall among thorns,
and the thorns grow up
and choke it, and it bears no
fruit.¹
