The Next Morning

The street looks
like a weary prostitute
whose smudged mascara,
garish smeared lipstick
cannot conceal the
the death littered asphalt
in the early dawn
all the horror
from the night before
remains on display
hundreds of shell casings
from senseless shootings
blood glistens along the curb
dried so thick it can’t be
washed into the already
clogged sewer
red stains remain
as reminders
a babies shoe still sits
on the sidewalk beside the
bright yellow taped crime scene
squad cars sit
by-standers hover,
mull around, talking, staring.
