The Ancient Model

Benjamin Harnett

We’re obsessed with models these days,
at least I am, all kinds. Plato
called them forms—I wonder
if his reached 72 inches
in bare feet. What must it be like
to be a young exemplar
of an ancient model, an old pattern
but a new day. I read somewhere
that the magnolia (when you read that
you will take it wrong—I mean
the little tree we planted
whose white flowers pop like
stars, not some heavy, southern-coded
thing) might have been the first
kind of flower to grace
the world. Magnolia, the dinosaurs
saw you, and the world’s first bee.
The ancient model had
gods for everything, and people
of the sea. There are no new models,
thought Einstein, but only
everything that was
and everything that is, and everything
that will be.
