Writing These Words Keeps Me Sane (So I Must Carry on Writing Them)

i told myself i didn’t want to write this poem earlier and
after you’ve read it you’ll probably agree it ain’t worth
nothing but dumping in this here electronic recycle bin but
then again until the damn thing is written how are we to know?

i just got back from some time away, sometime visiting
family, now just mum, and on my first shift back at work a
customer came to the checkout carrying a loose avocado
and as she placed it down in front of me i just drew a blank
knowing a million times over all the things it wasn’t but my
mind couldn’t get the damn information out and she looked
at me with disgust as i told here i needed one with a label
on it in order to scan it.

i guess that’s it, a funny moment in a time of abject misery
as i antagonise the middle-class shoppers of Kemp Town
whilst trying to forget my damn life has taken a knock with
the lose of a dear dear friend... whatever keeps you sane!
