Trudging Toward Nightfall

Christopher Kuhl

Where do I come from? Who
are my people? I trudge up through
the old cemetery,

built into a hill
overlooking a river. In the
cemetery,

my relatives’ bones
lie scattered, and their headstones
sit tilted, crumbling;

they cast long shadows in
the late afternoon
as the sun moves west. I

lie on the grave
of an older cousin, just for
practice and rest. Soon,

I won’t be practicing: my bones
will lie in the earth in perpetuity.
And the sun? It

will move east to west
as it always has,
casting old shadows,

trudging toward nightfall.
