a made-up construct

Linda M. Crate

what is a woman?
gender is a made-up
construct.

sometimes i wear
the mantle of
womanhood proudly,
but sometimes i don’t
feel like a woman
just a person;

so i think i can understand

those who don’t fit into
neat, tidy little boxes;

because i myself spill out of
the garden gate like
untamed roses—

what is girl, what is boy?

just words.
some people think that their
words matter more than the rights
of other people;
and i think that is rudimentary at best—

you can be defined by words,
if you wish,
but there are some of us
that are beyond your understanding who
articulate ourselves in words that
you pretend not to know.
