& it makes you angry

you see the way they stare
at your underage coworker:
old men, young men, some that
are barely even men;
but no one her own age—

you feel rage curling in your fists,
in glistening bands of blonde in your
auburn hair;

you wish they were phoenix feathers
so you could burn these men—

you’re reminded of when the perverts
started catcalling you,
fourteen or fifteen on your bike;
riding down the dirt road when an old man
far older than your grandfather says:
“nice ass, sweetheart”

and you’re so scared you ride home as
fast as your legs are able to take you—

& you blame yourself
even though it wasn’t your fault,
your brain is saying that you did something
wrong;

so you don’t tell your parents
you just bury inside—

& it makes you angry
that you still live in a world that
isn’t safe for women or young girls.
