Colors Of a September Night

Suzanne O’Connell

My boyfriend was driving
a lime-green Porsche 914
with removable roof.
We could see the moon
through the opening.

A hot wind,
muscular,
flexing its biceps,
flipped the car like a toy.
I dangled, upside down,
a puppet,
while crimson
leaked into my eyes.

Until that moment,
I was in love with the day.
My first day of graduate school.
I guess I was more in love with the day
than it was with me.

Some memories are redder than others.
Some have no color at all,
mere transparencies.
Some have so many colors,
they blend into black.
