The Pause

I didn’t know
that if you walk alone
along a sidewalk in the rain
with your hood up,
you can hear, when traffic pauses,

raindrops
tapping at your ears; can
pause and attend
to a primordial rhythm
made suddenly manifest.

Until the light turns green
and traffic advances
and that gentle reminder
of all you need worship
disappears.
